Byron/Stafford ~ Betty Ruth Murphy, age 89 , passed away at home on Thursday, May 26, 2016. She was born February 17, 1927 in Buffalo, a daughter of the late Harry Samuel Murphy and Emily Gertrude Dean. Betty graduated from the University of Buffalo with a BS in Medical Technology and an MS in Education. She worked for many years at Buffalo General Hospital as a Medical Technologist. In 1990, she retired as an Associate Professor from the University of Buffalo, where she taught Hematology and was the Program Director of the Medical Technology Program. She was very active in the American Society of Medical Technology, the Empire State Association of Medical Technologists and its Niagara-Frontier Chapter. She also served on the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Board of Registry and was its first non-pathologist chairman. Upon graduation from college, Betty played women’s semi-professional basketball and softball. She also enjoyed hunting, fishing, bingo, playing cards, travelling and was an avid bowler for many years. She and Barbara toured much of the United States including Hawaii and Alaska, four European countries, along with New Zealand and Australia. She is survived by her long time companion, Barbara L. Stein. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Emily Gail and Donald Haynes. Services for Betty will be private. Memorials may be made to Barbara L. Stein, c/o Falcone Family Funeral & Cremation Service Inc., P.O. Box 187, LeRoy, NY 14482, for distribution to Betty’s favorite charities.
